MODEL 2500 — Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge & 2500E Heated Rain/Snow Gauge
General Description
The Model 2500 Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge is a dependable instrument used for measuring precipitation. Rainfall entering the funnel collector (8 or 12 in.) is directed to the tipping bucket assembly. When an incremental amount of precipitation has been collected, the bucket assembly tips and activates a magnetic reed switch for a momentary contact closure output. The rainfall sample is discharged through the base of the gauge. A level is provided on the base for leveling of the unit. This unit is made of anodized and powder-coated aluminum. A 25 ft. signal cable is included.
The Model 2500E Electric Rain/Snow Gauge is used where 120 Vac power is available. A heater kit is added to the basic Model 2500 Rain Gauge to melt snow falling into the funnel. The resulting “water equivalent” of the snow is measured by the tipping bucket. A 25 ft. power cable and a 25 ft. signal cable are included.
The contact-closure output connects directly to HydroLynx ALERT2 data transmitters and to most data loggers, making the Model 2500 a good fit for flood early warning systems, precipitation monitoring networks, and cold-climate sites that need year-round rain and snow measurement. Can the Model 2500 measure snow?
The standard Model 2500 measures rain only. The Model 2500E electric rain/snow gauge adds a heater that melts snow in the funnel so the tipping bucket records its water equivalent. It requires 120 Vac power.
What calibrations are available?
The Model 2500 can be ordered with 0.01 in., 0.25 mm, 0.5 mm, or 1.0 mm per tip. Order codes ending in -M are calibrated for 1 mm.
Does the Model 2500 work with ALERT2 transmitters?
Yes. The gauge produces a momentary SPST normally open contact closure for each tip, which is the standard input for ALERT and ALERT2 data transmitters and most data loggers.
What is the difference between the 8 in. and 12 in. models?
The Model 2500 has an 8 in. (20 cm) orifice; the Model 2500-12 has a 12 in. (30 cm) orifice. The larger orifice collects a larger sample, which can improve accuracy in light precipitation.
