Precipitation Monitoring

Rain Gauge Stations & Tipping Bucket Sensors for Real-Time Rainfall Data

Accurate Rainfall Data — The Foundation of Flood Warning

Precipitation is the single most important measurement in any flood warning network. Accurate, real-time rainfall data gives emergency managers the earliest possible indication that conditions are developing for dangerous flooding. HydroLynx has manufactured self-reporting rain gauges and packaged rain gauge stations since the earliest days of the ALERT protocol, and our sensors are deployed in flood warning networks across the country.

Tipping Bucket Technology

HydroLynx tipping bucket rain sensors use a precision mechanical design to convert rainfall into discrete digital signals. As water drains through the collection funnel, it fills a calibrated bucket that tips when a precise volume — typically one millimeter — has accumulated. Each tip generates a digital signal that is counted by the data transmitter and reported in real time. The simplicity and reliability of the tipping bucket design has made it the worldwide standard for automated rainfall measurement in operational monitoring networks.

HydroLynx tipping buckets are made of hard anodized aluminum with self-lubricating nylon bearings for long-term reliability. A magnetically operated sealed reed switch provides the digital signal, eliminating the contact corrosion that degrades other switch types. Every HydroLynx tipping bucket sensor carries a lifetime warranty.

Rain Gauge Products

Model 5354/A2 Rain Station

Complete ALERT2 self-reporting rain station with 50386 transmitter, tipping bucket sensor, solar panel, and omnidirectional antenna.

Model 5854/A2 Rain Station

Complete ALERT2 self-reporting rain station with 50388 two-way transmitter for networks requiring polling and remote diagnostics.

Standalone Rain Gauges & Sensors

Models 2500, 2501, 5050P, 5054TS, and 5045 — tipping bucket sensors and gauge assemblies for integration into custom stations or replacement of existing sensors.

Model 2526 Wind Screen

Lexan wind screen that minimizes updraft-induced measurement errors — recommended for all gauges installed in exposed or windy locations.

Field Calibration

Accurate rainfall data depends on proper sensor calibration. HydroLynx manufactures the Model 2595 Precipitation Gauge Calibrator — a portable field calibration kit that simplifies both static and dynamic testing of tipping bucket rain gauges. The kit includes a calibrated water bottle, precision dispenser with four interchangeable orifices, and syringes for static tests.
